About Us

In the spring to fall months, aside from playing with the dogs in agility and tracking, many hours are spent in the great outdoors working in the perennial and vegetable gardens, around the fish pond in the backyard, mountain bike riding, hiking, camping and fishing, travelling, constructing agility equipment, or spending time at the family cottage on Lake Superior.

Gardening has been a passion for many years, gradually building my own personal oasis in my back yard. The pond was dug and built to create a "summer cottage" for the oranda goldfish that at one time inhabited and were bred in several aquariums in the house. Now only having one 90 gallon aquarium to house the "finned kids", they are all beautiful living jewels that have been acquired on my journeys, and usually flown home in my carryon, or are progeny from breedings in the pond over the seasons. A lot of time was spent, while designing my backyard oasis to make it dog proof and dog safe.

An iron gate which I designed, does not allow big or small dogs to gain access to the pond area. An area in the pond was created to allow the pekingese a place to drink safely. True, as a puppy, had a love for the taste of water lilies. He would go into the pond, and lift the baskets out, submerging his head into the pond like a moose. Then he would make salad bits out of my lilies. When a new leaf would almost break the surface, he would lean over and snip it off with his teeth. He has gotten better with age, although, I still watch him because he does like to fish.

K-9 Studio Dog Training Centre is another hobby that has turned into a small business. Having been in existence since 1983, we introduced flyball and agility to Thunder Bay, along with clicker training. Aside from having five sessions of classes a year, ranging from Puppy Kindergarten to Competition level classes, we also sponsor seminars to further give our students an opportunity to learn. Our instructors are often attending seminars throughout the year out of town, furthering their knowledge. K-9 Studio Agility Dogs Association hosts NADAC and CKC agility trials each year, while K-9 Studio Strike Force Flyball Team hosts a Flyball Tournament occasionally, and our team members travel to out of town events. We also promote responsible dog ownership by providing demonstrations at public events, like Canada Day. Check it out at www.k-9studio.com.

When spare time exists, wood carving, painting, drawing, wax sculpting (for the lost wax process), computer graphics as a freelancer, are other interests. A passion for carrousel horses, I enjoy carving rocking horses, and have a life size carrousel horse waiting to be completed when time and energy permits.

After a brave moment on ebay, we are now in possession of a 1987 Winnebago, to house us and the dogs on adventures to dog shows, or for pure pleasure. Due to my near fatal encounter with a moose in 2002, I am often fatiqued, and require a nap to travel further. The "Roamin' Trackstar" will and has provided the much needed comfort and security.

East coast here we come in 2006!
